Zebedee Rice with Laura
Boston
Before his fame, Zeb was O. Henry

"Hello Doxieland, I am writing from Boston to tell you that one of your creations, namely one of your doxies, Zebedee (O. Henry to you) was shown and won a prize at The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The MFA had a "Dog Days" event last Wednesday to publicize its new Jasper Johns exhibit which features a sculpture of a blue balloon dog. Over 400 people came and about 150 dogs. The museum served hot dogs, ginger cookies shaped like bones and treats for the doggies from Fi-Dough bakery.

Zeb was chosen to compete with six other dogs in the Minimalist category. He was chosen a runner up. The winner was a football player with a chihuahua.

When asked what his special points were, I told the crowd he was bred by an artist, born in a painting studio (which he was) and frequently poses with the nude models at the DeCordova museum (God's honest truth). He got lots of attention and was filmed snacking on a hot dog. So, you have made it to the big time... The MFA in Boston!

Postscript: A friend just called to say that Zebedee was featured on the Sunday morning news with Charles Osgood. It was a story about the event at the MFA. He was filmed there by a number of people and I gather was so cute, a clip of him was shown on CBS TV when talking about the event! Alas, I missed it. My friend, Linda, who was also there with her dogs, saw it by chance. Anyway, here is a descriptive clip from the online news report at CBS.com.

What a nice way to begin the "dog days" of summer.

(August 11, 2003, CBS) In Boston, CBS Sunday Morning discovered, the Museum of Fine Arts is going to the dogs.

No, man's best friend still isn't allowed to walk through the galleries, but dogs are being welcomed outside to highlight the exhibits inside.

Jeff Koon’s 2,200-pound, 10-foot-high bright blue steel “Balloon Dog” is the centerpiece of an exhibition called "Four Decades of Art: From Jasper Johns to Jeff Koons". The exhibit includes works by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, photographer Cindy Sherman, and sculptor Robert Therrien, who lets visitors enjoy a “dog’s view” of a dining room table.

"There's something about the size of the statement in this collection — full of confidence, very bold expressions," said museum director Malcolm Rogers.

Rogers awarded prizes for visiting canines. Categories were largest dog, smallest dog, best trick and the owner who most resembles his/her dog.

In the Dog Days of Summer, the Musem of Fine Arts, Boston, is showing its lighter side.

"Just for a bit of fun, you know," said Rogers. "The museum can let its hair down occasionally."
