When I was a kid we
had a dog - always a female. "Everybody" says, "Females make the
best pets" so that's what we had.
When I began my kennel I had that
same prejudice. I didn't want a male around. I drove 300 miles
to breed my females. The breeder convinced me that males are just
as sweet as the girls so I finally got my own stud. Now I have
a bunch - six of them. They are sweet little guys.
My boys have not been
neutered (they are studs, after all!), so they're messy.
They drink all day and squirt all day. They are "writing" with
pee pee everywhere, "This is mine; this is my territory; this
is still mine; my house; my corner; my tree". But these are
macho guys and their job is romance so we let them "write their
name around".
A male that has been
neutered is a super pet and absolutely as good as any old girl!
My male pups are priced $100 less that of comparable females.
They develop no bad habits - no squirts; no riding ankles; they
squat and go one long tinkle and that's that.
Once a male has learned
to raise his leg he will continue to do that even if he is neutered.
Spaying a Female
The word is SPAY. You
spay a female; you spade your garden. A spayed female has that
much less to worry about - that many fewer organs to get sick.
No unwanted puppies. A female should be spayed at an older age
than a male. Your veterinarian will handle that. "Having at least
one litter makes her a better pet" is a FAIRY TALE. Spay
her!
